NAI Applauds House Committee on Passage of Strong Children’s Privacy Legislation

COPPA 2.0 provides the opportunity to establish a new national standard for children’s data privacy, and a level playing field for all companies

WASHINGTON, D.C. (September 18, 2024) – Today, the House Energy & Commerce Committee passed the Children and Teens Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA 2.0, H.R. 7890) by voice vote. NAI President and CEO Leigh Freund issued the following statement in response to the Committee action:

“The NAI applauds the Committee for passing COPPA 2.0. NAI members and responsible companies across the digital advertising industry do not want to collect or use children’s data for targeted advertising, and COPPA 2.0 ensures that all companies are held to that standard. The legislation would also preserve the ability for child-directed sites and services to utilize contextual advertising, which is essential for monetizing free and low cost content for children.

The NAI calls on Congress to enact this legislation, and to create a national standard to replace the developing patchwork of conflicting state laws that have created an inconsistent set of requirements for minors and children’s data.”
