Consumer FAQs Opt-out Sunset
What is changing?
The NAI previously offered consumers cookie-based and email-based opt-out tools that enabled consumers to submit requests to opt out of tailored advertising to multiple NAI members simultaneously. However, due to changes to its self-regulatory program, the NAI has stopped offering these tools. Learn more.
Do these changes affect opt-out requests I previously submitted using NAI’s opt-out tools?
No. If you previously submitted opt-out requests using the NAI’s cookie-based or email-based opt-out tools, these changes will not affect your past requests, as those requests were passed on to the relevant member companies to implement the opt-outs at the time you made your request. It is important for consumers to keep in mind that the persistence of opt-outs stored in cookies depend in part on your browser settings, such as whether your browser has third-party cookies enabled or whether your browser limits how long third-party cookies may be stored. Increasingly, browser manufactures also limit the storage and use of third-party cookies by default, which may impact the functioning of opt-outs stored in cookies in some cases.
Are there other ways for me to opt out of tailored advertising?
Yes. The NAI continues to offer resources to help you understand and exercise your privacy rights and choices online, including on web browsers, mobile devices, and TVs. The NAI also offers a browser extension for Google Chrome that enables you to add the Global Privacy Control signal to your browser. Learn more.
